Russian
The Russian ethnic presence in Colorado, almost non-existent for most of the 20th Century, began to grow in the 1970’s with waves of immigrants and refugees from the former Soviet Union. Jobs in Denver were more plentiful at that time than in the larger U.S. coastal markets plus Denver had the appeal of a moderate climate and close proximity to the mountains. In a short time the new immigrants grew to appreciate the area’s relaxed environment and active lifestyle with access to outdoor activities and wide open spaces as ideal for raising families. Today the Russian speaking population in the greater Denver area has grown to almost 80,000 people with the majority being Jewish. Neighborhoods with high Russian speaking populations include Glendale and South East Denver stretching between the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, the Jewish Community Center, the Glendale Library at 999 S. Clermont, Club Valencia Condominiums on S. Parker Road and Oneida Square off of Leetsdale Road commonly known as “the Russian Plaza.” Over the past ten or fifteen years Denver’s earliest Russian speaking neighborhoods on the west side of town along Colfax Avenue have lost their ethnic character as residents moved on to form new suburban communities in Aurora, Littleton and Arvada.
Denver’s Russian speaking population is industrious and pursues many professions including bankers, attorneys, brokers many small business owners. Their rich culture can be found in restaurants, art galleries, churches and retail shops located in neighborhoods throughout the city.
