Denver Community Overview
Israel is as diverse area in terms of residents, faith and culture. Denver reflects that same diversity in our Israeli population. Throughout Denver you will find people of Israeli heritage who reflect the culture of this historical and magnificant country and who have brought their unique traditions to our Mile High City.
Denver's Jewish population is highly notable, as the Denver Metropolitan Area also has one of the largest Jewish communities in the U.S. As of 2006 there were 78,620 people of Jewish faith living in Colorado – 1.7% of the total population of Colorado. In the city of Denver, many members of the Jewish community are found in the West Colfax and Hilltop neighborhoods. The heritage of many generations of Hebrew Denverites is very visible in the city, and its many landmarks (several prominent synagogues among them). Denver is also home to the National Jewish Medical and Research Center. Famous peole of Jewish faith who are from or who lived in Denver include musicians Bob Dylan, Matisyahu and comedians The Smothers Brothers.
Karmiel, northern Israel's youngest and fastest growing development town was founded in 1964 and become Denver's fourth sister city in 1977. The builders of Karmiel beautifully emulate the pioneer spirit of Denver. Denver and Karmiel share energetic urban planning, mild climates, low humidity, and a mountainous background. The "Denver Room" which sits in the midst of a community/cultural center in Karmiel and the Denver Park acquaint residents there with our association. Denver's Karmiel Park reflects our connection with our sister city in Israel.
