Denver Community Overview

Denver’s Chinese community has its roots in the 19th Century, when the city’s Chinatown lay along Larimer between 15th and 20th streets, near the heart of downtown. Sometimes derided as “Hop Alley,” this enclave rarely numbered more than 1,000 Chinese inhabitants.Dragon Boat Festival

There were lots of Chinese people that worked on the transcontinental railroads that came through and they settled here. Today there are approximately 16,500 Chinese Americans in the metro area. People of Chinese decent own over 1,000 businesses in Denver, including restaurants, ethnic markets, and importers. There are several community resources online in Denver.

Denver maintains sister city relations with Kunming, China. Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in southwest China, is Denver's eighth sister city. Relations were formalized in 1985 by the signing of the agreement by then Mayors Federico Pena and Zhu Zhi-Hui. Located in a mountainous area, with a population of 3.5 million, its altitude is a little higher than Denver at 6,200 feet. Kunming is said to be a city of four seasons: all like spring.
